Features

Illumine Glitter Crème by Amerikan Body Art replaces their plant-based glitter creme Biosphere.

Amerikan Body Art ran out of plant-based glitter for Biosphere so they have replaced it with an identical color-match using regular polyester glitter. It is called Illumine because it illuminates your designs with an ethereal glow.  This transparent holographic glitter matches every colour combination.

It is perfect for adding sparkles to your face and body painting designs as it can be used over completed designs without smearing them! Amerikan Body Art Glitter Crème provides a durable coverage – not waterproof or smudge-proof, but it does hold up well for most applications.

The Glitter Crème base is similar to a thick waxy lip balm, and it is densely packed with tons of gorgeous cosmetic grade polyester glitters. It can be used for light to heavy glitter coverage. Being so densely packed with glitter, a little goes a long way, while taking up little space in your kit.

  • Colour: “Illumine” – holographic white
  • Particle size: small to very fine
  • Particle shape: hexagonal
  • Volume: 15g

Please note: Due to the limitation of photography and differences in monitors and screens, colours of products may appear different to images displayed on the website though we endeavour to make them as accurate as possible.

About Amerikan Body Art (ABA)

Amerikan Body Art is a small family-owned and run business, based in Florida, USA, started by Erika Harrison.

Erika Harrison started out as a professional henna body art and airbrush tattoo artist in 2002 while home-schooling her kids and studying for her Master’s Degree in International Business.

In 2003, Erica started teaching classes and wrote a business manual, “How to Start a Henna Body Art Business” and the book, “How to Start a Face Painting and Body Art Business”, plus numerous articles for industry magazines.

And since safe, professional quality henna products were difficult to locate, Erica Harrison started selling products so her students could get the supplies that they needed.

...And that’s how Amerikan Body Art was born.

The Amerikan Body Art online shop was launched in 2004.

During her travels to teach at conventions and tradeshows all over the world, Erica discovered that the face and body art industry includes a myriad of art forms. She began to experiment and to create her own face and body art products, expanding the business.

Though Amerikan Body Art has grown from the simple online shop launched in 2004, they still consider themselves a boutique manufacturer and distributor. They still do everything by hand, in small batches.  This allows them to be certain that they are only distributing the highest quality products.

Erika says life is too short to dread going in to work every day and her passion is helping people to figure out how to earn a living, while doing what they enjoy.

Since the beginning, Amerikan Body Art has always done their best to be kind to the planet.

They operate very efficiently with almost no wasted product.  Even testers and proto-type products are given away to be used, rather than disposed of.  They re-use all of the shipping and packing materials that that receive from their suppliers, and when they do need to purchase shipping supplies, they opt for recycled, recyclable, or compostable materials. They do their best to source our products from US-based companies, to reduce fossil fuel consumption.

Amerikan Body Art chooses their products very carefully, with great concern for ingredient quality and safety.  While they never test their products on animals, they do thoroughly test them on themselves and their friends before releasing them to the public.  As a vegetarian/vegan family, most of their products are vegan, but in the rare instance that a vegan alternative is unavailable, they are sure to mention that in the product information.

About Plant-based glitter

Regular polyester glitters are micro-plastic particles made from non-renewable (petroleum-based) resources, and will remain in nature indefinitely.

Plant-Based Compostable Glitter is a non-plastic glitter, made from plant-based cellulose, such as corn. But due to the manufacturing process (which is designed to create a more durable product), it only degrades in an industrial composting environment. Wastewater treatment facilities do an excellent job of filtering out microplastic, so we have no doubts that they also can filter out this type of glitter. The filtered waste from water treatment facilities is then essentially in an industrial composting environment which should degrade the plant-based glitters. Studies have shown that wastewater treatment facilities are NOT a significant source for microplastic being released into public waterways. Therefore, compostable glitters that are washed down a shower drain, in most cases, are not a concern for marine health.

While Plant-Based Compostable glitter is not an ideal care-free product, with regards to eco-friendliness, it does address some of the concerns and is a step in the right direction. It is made with renewable resources, can degrade in an appropriate environment, and has a shorter lifespan than traditional plastic. The cost, while still higher than traditional glitter, is much lower than the fully biodegradable glitters, and is therefore more accessible to artists. As they say….Pick your battles, and just do your best. Every little bit helps.

Plant-Based Compostable glitters need to be kept in airtight storage conditions as humidity can cause clumping. Usually this does not impact the performance of the glitter itself, but depending on how you apply it, you may have issues with applicators not handling the clumps well. The ultra-fine particles have been tested in an aloe gel base and can have a shelf life of at least several months once mixed. Larger particle sizes (.025” and larger), will tend to curl in a gel base, within a short amount of time and should only be mixed into gel as you are ready to use it. Mixing the glitters into a wax/oil based product (such as Glitter Crème Base) does not seem to negatively affect any of the glitters.

Thank you for joining us while we begin our path towards a more sustainable future. Every journey begins with a single step.

As an alternative to biodegradable (or traditional) glitters, you might consider mica powders which are a mineral-based product that is eco-friendly for both land and sea environments.
