I’m often asked by beginners for advice on what to buy and what to paint so here’s a few ideas for simple designs to get you started – Rainbows! There are lots of ways to use a 1 inch rainbow, to which you can add hand-painted or stenciled simple flowers, hearts or stars
The 1 inch ‘rainbows’ are much easier to use than the wider 50g rainbow cakes – and much more versatile.
As a beginner you can do simple rainbows and lines – even this wows the kids and parents as all the colours of the rainbow suddenly appear. Just add glitter! This is particularly great for the toddlers that won’t sit for long, don’t want you touching their face, are shy and unconvinced about the whole thing. A quick little rainbow on their hand and they are won over. They may be happy with that or eager for more.
With practice you can create all kinds of wonderful images and abstract designs with these “1-stroke” wonders.
Apart from the 1-stroke split-cake, you’ll need a 1 inch flat brush. The rainbow can be applied with a sponge instead but you’ll have much less control.
Also recommended is some glitter (holographic white goes with all the colours of the rainbow!), black and white paint for adding stars, flowers, butterflies, swirls, dots or anything else you desire, and a couple of round brushes for that.
